Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area

Boston Harbor Islands – Peddocks Island

The mission of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is to make the Boston Harbor Islands system—with opportunities for education, recreation, and restful solitude within an urban area—an integral part of the life of the region and the nation by protecting the islands and their associated resources while at the same time improving public knowledge and access.

Here is a place where you can walk a Civil War-era fort, visit historic lighthouses, explore tide pools, hike lush trails, camp under the stars, or relax while fishing, picnicking or swimming-all within reach of downtown Boston.

The 34 islands are managed by a unique, 13-member partnership that includes the National Park Service, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and other public and private organizations. An advisory council provides a mechanism for public involvement.
